At Nexus Institute, we believe your learning doesn’t start when you enrol with us — it starts wherever your journey began. That’s why we offer two formal pathways to have your existing knowledge and skills counted towards your Nexus qualification.
If you’ve completed units or subjects at another recognised institution — a university, TAFE, or approved provider — those may be directly credited towards equivalent units in your Nexus course, reducing the total number of units you need to complete.
If you have worked at a professional level in a field relevant to your chosen course, you may be eligible to have that experience recognised as equivalent to formal study. You’ll need to demonstrate your skills and experience through documentation and evidence.
Every student’s situation is unique, but here are two common scenarios to give you a sense of how Credit & Advanced Standing works in practice.
Diploma of Information Technology → Bachelor of Information Technology
Priya completed a Diploma of Information Technology at her local TAFE, covering networking fundamentals, systems administration, and introductory programming. She’s now ready to take her career further and has enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology at Nexus Institute.
Because her TAFE Diploma is an accredited Australian qualification with substantial overlap with the first year of the Nexus BIT, Priya is eligible to apply for Credit Transfer. After assessment, she receives credit for several first-year units — meaning she can begin her Nexus degree in second year, saving significant time and course fees.
Priya’s application required her academic transcript and course outline from TAFE, which our Admissions team used to match her completed units against the BIT curriculum.
Outcome: Credit granted for multiple first-year units — advanced entry into Year 2Amir successfully completed the first year of a Bachelor of Computer Science at a recognised university in his home country, studying introductory programming, computer architecture, mathematics for computing, and software development principles. He has now relocated to Australia and wishes to continue his studies at Nexus Institute in the Bachelor of Information Technology.
Nexus assesses applications for Credit Transfer from international institutions on a case-by-case basis. Our Admissions team will review official certified transcripts, course outlines, and where available, unit descriptions in English. For Amir, units with clear equivalence to Nexus BIT content are eligible for credit, while units that don’t align closely are considered on their merits.
Amir is encouraged to submit as much documentation as possible — the more clearly we can see what was covered, the more credit we can consider.
Formal qualifications aren’t the only way to gain Credit & Advanced Standing. If you have substantial, relevant work experience in the field of your chosen course, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Do you have prior formal study (Credit Transfer) or relevant professional experience (RPL) — or both?
For Credit Transfer: Official academic transcripts + unit/subject outlines from your previous institution.
For RPL: CV, employment references, position descriptions, and any supporting evidence of your skills.
Complete the Credit & Advanced Standing application form and attach all supporting documentation. Submit this to Nexus Admissions — you can do this as part of your enrolment application or separately.
Our Academic team will review your application and compare your prior learning against the relevant units in your chosen course. We may contact you if additional information is needed.
Is sufficient equivalence demonstrated?
You’ll receive a formal letter confirming your advanced standing and updated enrolment details.
We’ll let you know what additional documentation or information could support your application, or explain our decision.
