Course Overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Development) is a comprehensive, industry-aligned degree designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional mindset required to thrive in the fast-paced world of software development.

Across three years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time), students gain in-depth experience in programming, project management, cyber security, application development, databases, cloud computing, and software engineering principles. The course balances theoretical foundations with hands-on learning through real-world projects, team-based collaboration, and industry tools.

Students will graduate ready to design, build, and manage software solutions across a variety of platforms and industries—ranging from mobile and web development to enterprise systems and emerging technologies such as AI and IoT.

Study Load

Each semester includes a mix of lectures, tutorials, group projects, practical labs, and assessments.
  • International students must maintain a full-time study load (as per student visa conditions).

Additional Expectations:

  • Students should allocate an additional 10–15 hours per week in each of their subjects for self-directed study, research, project work, and preparation for assessments.

The standard full-time study load is 8 subjects in a year. Full-time students may choose to enrol in three or four subjects in a trimester and, if needed, make up the fourth subject in trimester 3. Students who have satisfactorily completed eight subjects in two trimesters may apply for approved leave in their third trimester. Students who have failed any subjects in their first two trimesters may attempt them again in their third trimester. Students may also accelerate their progress in the third trimester by enrolling in subjects from later years and elective subjects for which they have satisfied the prerequisites. The maximum total number of subjects in which a student can enrol in a trimester is four subjects.

Assessment

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Developer) course uses a range of assessment methods designed to measure student achievement of learning outcomes and prepare them for real-world IT environments. All assessments align with TEQSA’s Higher Education Standards Framework and CRICOS compliance requirements.

Assessment Schedule:

  • Assessments are distributed throughout each 12-week term, with a mix of formative and summative tasks.

  • Major assessments occur during the final two weeks of the study period.

ICT100 Society, Technology and Disruption

This subject explores real-world technologies and applications driving our future, examining their impacts on industries, economies, and society. It covers digital connectivity, data capture, integrity, and processing, and disruptive technologies such as VR, AI, and autonomous systems. Students will gain insights into technological trends and their regulatory and societal implications. This subject contributes to the degree by preparing students for roles in managing digital transformation across various sectors.

This subject aims to give students an understanding of computer systems and components, hardware, CPU, memory systems, and how these are impacted and optimised in the context of current computing technologies. An introduction to the steps of creating an information system enables students to design and implement a simple relational database for an information system, and to test and optimise this database.

ICT102 is a core subject in the Information Technology courses, focusing on communication as an IT professional in all contexts, as well as ethical and cultural aspects of working in the profession. Students will learn to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with diverse groups of people, and to articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Students will also learn to form effective prompts for generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and evaluate the output. Underpinning all aspects of communication is respect for diversity and the ethics and social responsibility of uses of technology will also be covered by this subject.

They will learn to implement and manage LANs and WANs, utilising relevant technologies and protocols to ensure efficient connectivity. The subject covers basic network security principles and practices, providing a foundation in safeguarding networks against threats. The subject will provide the fundamentals of data analytics for big data, introducing the key elements of data and analytics including diverse data sets, data collection, cleaning, transformation, storage, processing, presentation and management. Through hands-on case studies using industry standard tools, students will gain practical understanding of data-driven methodologies to support ethical decision making. The students will get exposed to statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence at a foundational level and explore their applications across diverse data sets. The students will implement data analytics techniques to analyse, produce and present data insights, evaluated against data quality measures. ICT106 Web Development is a core subject in Information Technology courses, focusing on the fundamentals of web development. It covers web languages, the use of common frameworks, client-side scripting, responsive design, usability and accessibility, and emerging trends in web technology. This subject will give you foundational web development knowledge on which you will build during the rest of your degree, and throughout your professional career.

Students will learn to safeguard information systems, data, and services from unauthorised access and misuse. ICT200 Software Engineering

This subject provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of software engineering. It covers the entire software development life cycle (SDLC), from requirements gathering to design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Students will learn various SDLC models, Agile methods, determine software requirements, design software solutions, implement and test these solutions, and develop professional skills necessary for effective team collaboration. Students will learn to design software solutions using established Agile principles and design patterns. This subject aims to equip students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to succeed in the field of software engineering, fostering both technical proficiency and professional behaviour.

This subject offers a practical introduction to data structures and algorithms, essential for developing high-performance Python programs. Students will learn to implement and analyse arrays, sorting algorithms, stacks, queues, linked lists, recursion, binary trees, balanced trees (AVL and Red Black), hash tables, and graphs. The course emphasises real-world examples and interactive visualisations, helping students understand how these structures and algorithms improve efficiency and performance.

This subject provides an in-depth exploration of advanced programming concepts and practices for real world application. Students will engage with complex programming features, analyse language design and implementation, and assess language suitability for various applications. This subject introduces software testing as an art, craft, and science, emphasizing a practical, step-by-step approach. Students will explore black-box, white-box, random, subject, object-oriented, and application testing, understanding the underlying principles and limitations of each method. This subject provides a comprehensive and intuitive approach to project management, leveraging the extensive knowledge and methodologies presented in Project Management. Students will explore tools and methods used at all stages of a project, covering project health checks, strategic project management, new business models, lean project management, artificial intelligence, and new metrics and KPIs. Students will learn to explain project management frameworks, develop realistic project plans, manage project execution, implement risk management strategies, exhibit communication and leadership skills, and evaluate project performance to devise improvement plans.

This subject builds on students’ programming foundation to introduce the principles and practices of UI/UX design. Students will learn to understand user needs, conduct research, and design intuitive interfaces. The content covers key concepts like accessibility, user research methods, information architecture, interaction design, and visual design. Through practical exercises and projects, students will develop the skills to create engaging and effective user experiences, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, providing students with a deeper understanding of how visual and interaction design principles contribute to effective user experiences.

ICT206 – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is a subject that introduces students to the exciting and rapidly evolving fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). This subject is crucial for aspiring IT professionals as AI and ML are transforming industries across the globe. You will cover the foundations of AI/ML, hands-on techniques in this field, and an introduction to Generative AI and Large Language Models. You will also discuss bias, fairness, privacy and the societal impact of AI systems. The principles of AI and ML can be applied to a wide range of fields, making this knowledge valuable regardless of a student’s specific career path within IT.

ICT 300 Database Design and Management

ICT300 is a core subject in the Information Technology courses focusing on the skills required to analyse data, design, normalise and develop databases, as well as query them for reporting information. You will design and develop a database from a case study, and use SQL queries to get information from the database, testing it for correctness and efficiency. You will also learn how databases are used on the web, and how to manage and maintain a database. Finally, you will examine how databases are changing, and new techniques that are being used.

This Subject focuses on the principles and practices of secure software systems design and development, integrating security throughout the software development lifecycle. Students will learn to apply secure coding principles, analyse software architecture for security weaknesses, evaluate risk factors, and implement appropriate security controls. The Subject emphasises a systematic approach to security, ensuring that secure practices are followed consistently, rather than relying on ad hoc methods. Students will be able to apply concepts of software security risks and strategies to real-world complex problems.

In this subject, students will work together in teams to initiate, plan, and begin the development of an IT project. This subject is the first of the two capstone project subjects. The aim of the capstone project(s) is to give students the opportunity to apply and extend the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course to a real-world IT project, including careful planning, scope control, and task management to ensure project success. In this subject, working in teams of 3-4 members, students will engage in essential project stages, including initial concept development, feasibility analysis, requirements elicitation, analysis, design, and initial implementation. Upon completing this subject, students will demonstrate the skills involved in developing a real-world IT project, utilising project management and development techniques and platforms. They will be able to apply the relevant knowledge and skills gained during the course, including practical soft skills, such as communication and collaboration within the context of a real-world IT project. Each project will be carried out for an industry “client” who will specify the requirements and provide feedback at various stages of project development. The development work will be carried out at Nexus Institute.

ICT302 and ICT303 are a capstone project over 2 subjects , which require the students to complete a real-world software development project with an industry sponsor. Students are expected to continue development over the mid-semester break and between semester break.

This Subject focuses on the principles and practices of cloud computing and DevOps, emphasizing their importance in modern IT infrastructure and innovation. Students will learn to analyse cloud computing problems, design and develop applications using DevOps principles, integrate solutions with cloud APIs and services, and explore security and privacy issues in cloud computing systems. Through this course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of cloud environments, architectural layers, models, and security controls, as well as the business and economic factors driving cloud adoption.

This Subject explores the development of high-performance mobile apps on both iOS and Android platforms. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of mobile device architectures, interfaces, operating systems, and middleware technology. Through hands-on projects, learners will apply user-centred design techniques, create standalone and web-based mobile applications, and address privacy and security requirements specific to mobile applications. By engaging in team-based and individual exercises, students will be equipped with the skills necessary to build sophisticated mobile applications using modern development frameworks.

This subject explores the transformative impact of digital technologies on organisational processes and structures. Students will evaluate how advancements in technology reshape operations and strategic frameworks. Emphasis is placed on developing strategies for effective change management, ensuring smooth transitions during digital transformations. Through real-world case studies and practical applications, students will apply principles of digital transformation and change management to solve contemporary business challenges. Additionally, the course critically examines the ethical considerations and human factors crucial for successful digital transformation, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement and ethical decision-making. In this subject, students will work together in teams and continue the development of an IT project that they have started in the previous capstone subject. The aim of the capstone project(s) is to give students the opportunity to apply and extend the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course to a real-world IT project, including careful planning, scope control, and task management to ensure project success. In this subject, working in teams of 3-4 members, students will engage in essential project stages, including implementation, testing, and delivery. They will also employ appropriate quality assurance techniques to meet project requirements effectively. Upon completing this subject, students will learn how to develop a real-world IT project, utilising project management and development techniques and platforms. They will be able to apply the relevant knowledge and skills gained during the course, including practical soft skills, such as communication and collaboration within the context of a real-world IT project. The development work will be carried out at Nexus Institute.

This Subject provides a comprehensive understanding of IoT systems, covering their architecture, components, and practical applications. Students will explore IoT use cases, smart sensors, and connectivity schemes, including both wired and wireless options. The Subject emphasizes the importance of IoT protocols, analytics, security, and privacy, providing simple explanations for these critical topics. Practical development of IoT solutions is also covered, equipping students with the skills needed to design and implement IoT-based information systems for smart applications.

Entry Requirements

International Students Admission Criteria for Undergraduate courses 

  1. Students must be 18 years of age before commencement of the designated study period.
  2. The minimum academic entry requirement for all students is an Australian Year 12 senior secondary school certificate with an ATAR 50 or its international equivalent and the conditions consistent with the requirements for Subclass 500 visas in the case of international students.
  3. Completion of AQF Level 4 study-If a student completes an Australian Certificate IV in vocational study (AQF Level 4), they will be able to enol in an undergraduate course at NEXUS INSTITUTE
  4. English Language Proficiency
  5. International students have a visa requirement. To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full-time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration

 

English Language Proficiency

English language requirements apply to international applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants are:

Interview 

The personal interview will be held with the applicant and a senior member of NEXUS INSTITUTE staff. This interview may be conducted in person, or by phone, or using other available technology. The purpose of the interview is to ensure the applicant has a high chance of success in their chosen Award Course based on identified and potential academic skills, personal resilience, resources, motivation and commitment. International students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances .
