Robotics for Software Developers

A practical bridge from application code to sensors, actuators, embedded interfaces and ROS2. Participants learn why a fault in a physical system is not always in the software.

Non-award professional education. This course is not an accredited qualification and does not provide academic credit toward a Nexus degree.

What participants learn to do

  • Read a sensor datasheet and identify trade-offs that matter for a real task.
  • Calibrate a sensor, quantify error and distinguish precision from accuracy.
  • Interface sensors and actuators through a microcontroller and common buses.
  • Publish sensor data and command an actuator in a small ROS2 system.

Designed for experienced programmers and mixed software–mechanical teams. It is not an introduction to programming, an advanced robot-kinematics course or a vendor certification.

Learning sequence

Signals, noise and calibration

Accuracy, precision, resolution, repeatability, noise sources and error bounds.

Range and proximity

Ultrasonic, infrared and LiDAR sensing, including real bench limitations.

Vision and motion

Cameras, lens distortion, IMUs and the way small measurement errors become drift.

Position, force and feedback

Encoders, force and torque sensing, placement choices and feedback.

Motors and motion

Motors, drivers, PWM, control, current limits and thermal constraints.

Embedded interfaces

Microcontrollers, interrupts, UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, voltage levels and protection.

ROS2 integration

Nodes, topics, messages, quality of service, coordinate frames and diagnostics.

Integrated machine

Connect sensing, control and actuation; test latency, dropouts and failure behaviour.
